Technical Specifications of Shock Tube Initiators

Initiator Type: Remotely operated battery powered electric spark based initiator for all variety of Shock Tubes with high degree of safety built in.

Spark Energy: 2 to 5  Joules (Watts)

Configuration: Consists of two units Field Unit and Handheld Unit interconnected by 2-core cable.

Power supply for Field Unit:

  • From inbuilt Chargeable Li-ion Battery (7.4V, 2500 mAh) along with charge controller. 
  • “Low Battery” indication provided. 
  • 100 hours of operation and/or 1000 initiations per one full charge.
  • Full charging time is 9hours. “Charging” and “Full charge” indication by LEDs.
  • Battery Overcharge protection.

Power supply for Handheld Unit: 

  • From a replaceable 9V non-chargeable battery.
  • 2000 operations of battery life.

Operating Conditions:

  • Operating Temperature: -10°C to +55°C 
  • Humidity:90% no-condense
  • Storage temperature: -25°C to +55°C (batteries excluded)

Safety and protection:

  • Power ON/OFF switch. No spark generates when the switch is OFF.  – INLINE/BYPASS switch. Sparking Unit is disconnected to high voltage circuit when switch is in BYPASS and even if any energy is  – INLINE/BYPASS switch. Sparking Unit is disconnected to high voltage circuit when switch is in BYPASS and even if any energy is generated it will be discharged internally.

Yes, blasting can be done without traditional electric or electronic detonators by using shock tube initiators. They eliminate risks from electromagnetic interference and provide reliable blast initiation, ideal for many mining and industrial environments. New regulations in India actively discourages the use of electric detonators making the shock tube initiators as the only viable alternative

Shock tube initiators are a safe and reliable alternative to traditional detonators, especially electric ones. They enable non-electric initiation, which is ideal for sites where electrical interference is a concern. As a safer and simpler option, shock tube initiators are becoming popular across industrial and mining applications.

Electric detonators initiate blasts using an electrical signal, while shock tube initiators use a non-electric shock wave in a reactive-coated tube. Shock tube initiators are safer where electromagnetic interference might be an issue and provide better control over blasting, particularly where new regulations restrict electric detonator use.

Electronic detonators offer precise blast timing but rely on electronic components that can be affected by electromagnetic interference. Given that new regulations in India limit the use of electric detonators, shock tube initiators present a simpler, safer alternative. Being non-electric, they are well-suited for areas where electronic signals may impact blast safety.

PESO, in its reply to RTI Application No. PAESO/R/E/25/00011; 11/01/2025 has clarified that no approval is needed for shock tube initiators.

Similarly, DGMS, in its RTI Reply No.RTI-11/GEN(MSE);dated 16.06.2025 has provided the following clarification

As per the clarification issued by the DGMS Approval Policy of DGMS is uploaded on the public domain, mentioning procedure and list of equipment’s required approval ( www.dgms.gov.in under approval section)

As per the DGMS, there is no other circular / notifications on the use of shock tube initiators in Metalliferous mines.  A review of the DGMS policy further confirms that shock tube initiators are not included in the list of items that require DGMS approval.

Based on the above, it is evident that no approval from either PESO or DGMS is required for the use of shock tube initiators.
