Rock excavation has been practiced since ancient times, with explosives becoming widely used during the Industrial Revolution due to increasing demand for minerals. Although blasting remains one of the cheapest and fastest methods of rock breaking, environmental concerns, noise, vibrations, and public awareness have increased the need for safer and better-controlled excavation methods. Ripping is an important alternative, particularly in softer rock, but its productivity decreases with increasing rock hardness and it requires higher capital investment. Therefore, selecting between blasting and ripping is a critical decision in mining and project execution.

Seismic velocity and electrical resistivity methods can be used to assess rock rippability and determine suitable areas for ripping. While seismic methods have limitations in obtaining detailed information at specific locations, resistivity provides additional information about rock properties with depth. The study emphasizes that blasting near sensitive structures requires proper documentation, monitoring, and adherence to sound and vibration limits. It concludes that blasting should be adopted carefully, while ripping is a suitable alternative for softer rock, with a combination of seismic and resistivity methods providing more comprehensive information for excavation planning.

Fragmentation using explosives by blasting is the most economical, cheapest and fastest method of rock fragmentation and loosening material from the host rock, making it suitable for excavation. Blasting performance is generally affected by the structure and rock properties of the rock mass. As mine sizes and excavation activities in civil engineering increase, the volume of rock blasted per blast is also increasing.

Blasting can produce undesirable effects such as overbreak, ground vibrations, noise, air overpressure and fumes, which, if not controlled, may cause damage to nearby neighbourhoods and structures.

The objective of this paper is to review research conducted on blast-induced ground vibrations and broadly identify the existing research gaps. Previous research has focused on methods for controlling ground vibrations and associated damage, establishing permissible limits, developing empirical formulas for accurate prediction of ground vibrations, and improving prediction models.

The research also considers factors such as ground surface conditions, charge length, the accuracy and inaccuracy of delay detonators and their acceptable limits, geological structures including jointing patterns, geomechanical properties of rock, strata changes, and improvements in prediction formulas through cloud computing, IoT (Internet of Things), and data mining.

Effective stemming is a critical yet frequently underestimated factor governing the utilisation of explosive energy in bench blasting. This paper reports the results of controlled field trials conducted at the Sitapuram Limestone Mine, the captive quarry of Zuari Cement Limited, located in Chintalapalem Mandal, Suryapet District, Telangana, India. Stemming plugs were deployed in half of a 29-hole blast to quantify their effect on rock fragmentation quality, muckpile throw, and per-tonne blasting cost relative to conventionally stemmed holes. The blast design comprised a staggered two-row pattern with 150 mm diameter holes, 8.5 m depth, 4 m burden, 5.5 m spacing, and ANFO as the primary blasting agent. Results indicate measurably improved fragmentation and greater muckpile displacement in the stemming-plug-assisted portion of the face. A preliminary cost comparison is presented. The findings corroborate the growing body of literature demonstrating that stemming plugs, by generating an air deck and reflecting a tensile stress wave within the borehole column, significantly enhance the efficiency of explosive energy utilisation without increasing drilling or explosives expenditure.

Download Field Evaluation of Stemming Plugs in Limestone Mining

The post Field Evaluation of Stemming Plugs in Limestone Mining first appeared on Uttam Blastech.

Blasting is the most essential part of Mining and Civil Engineering and often the cause of most of disputes with the neighbours as the blasting produces Unwanted Ground Vibrations, sound etc. And is often blamed for the damage of the neighbouring properties.

Alternates to blasting such as ripping, cutting etc, are used at a few places but have their own limitations. Thus Rock Blasting has no substitute. It’s the cheapest and fastest Rock Breaking technique and the only technique capable of producing huge volumes as demanded by today’s business needs.

Higher volumes of productions necessitate higher volumes of use of explosives. Making it more susceptible to claims and litigation.

As the Mining & Civil Engineering industry expands and so also the villages and cities, explosives users need to find the ways to insulate themselves against spurious claims and vexation litigation. The legal position elucidates the tortious and regulatory liability of the mine owner. The object of the regulations is to ensure a fair balance between the right of the mine owner and the right to life and liberty of the persons as guaranteed by the Constitution of India.

This paper discusses the facts, legal position and mitigation methods of such claims and litigations.

Planning your crusher layout is very critical to the entire planning process.

While crusher layout in series reduces the capital costs, it severely reduces the overall availability of the plant.

While Modular/ Parallel layout increases the capital cost and also increases the Variable costs a bit; the overall costs come down as the Plant availability increases many times.

Example:

A 3 stage Plant with a availability percentage of- 75%
